Gunmen have shot dead Somalia's most senior United Nations official in the capital Mogadishu. The head of the UN Development Programme, Osman Ali Ahmed, was shot as he left a mosque. He died later in hospital. His son and another man were also injured in the attack. Islamist militants frequently target UN officials in an Iraq-style insurgency against the UN backed government.
