Merkel warns democracy at risk with food shortages
German Chancellor Angela Merkel has warned on the eve of the G-8 summit in Japan that rising food prices could lead to international disruptions. Merkel said food shortages and conflicts over food distribution could put democracy at risk and destabilise countries. She also said that major industrial nations had to stick to commitments made at last year's summit in Germany to cut greenhouse gas emissions in half by the year 2050. The three-day summit, which begins on Monday, includes meetings between G-8 leaders and heads of several African countries, as well as major emerging economies, like China, India and Brazil.
