A native Bavarian, Mathis finished high school in New Mexico. He studied African politics in London and journalism in New York before working as a newspaper reporter in southern California and Las Vegas. After a brief stint at a newspaper near the German-Polish border, he joined DW-WORLD's English team in November 2003.
